Hide the Audio Source Icon in Unity

11/26/2014

In the scene editor, audio sources render with a screen space aligned icon of a speaker which helps you see which objects have sounds attached to them.
However this also obstructs your view of the object and can be confusing if you have a lot of audio sources.  Fortunately it is easy to toggle on and off from the gizmo rollout.  You can also use this to toggle other features displayed in the editor.  Quite handy!

Pulse Rifle

I haven't done any 3D printing for a while, so I decided to model up a pulse rifle from Aliens in 1/6 scale for a future move project involving Barbie Dolls in space with big guns called "Barb Hella:  Space Cop".  Modeled in Maya and then uploaded into ShapeWays and sent for printing in polished white nylon.  Maya uses some weird internal scaling so I'm not sure if it will be the right size.    Also the fine details like the hollow gun muzzles caused ShapeWays to require an autofix which made them fatter.  We'll see how that works when the part shows up next week.  I think in the future it would be better to use metal tube for those parts.  Makes more sense to me.

Need some sound effects?

Sounds effects? I have loads of them.  Some have been collected over the years from free websites, others were purchased from iTunes.  One of the most useful sets I have came free with a Sony Vegas upgrade, still sometimes I find myself searching for that one specific sound.  Anyway, these guys seem to be good, I was able to find some suitably spooky ambient sounds at the right price, with a clear license and I was able to download them very easily.  Their license specifically covers games which is great.

Now to see if I can scare myself! :-)

And it Talks!

Several layers of billboard sprites with animation keyed off of an audio sample means this severed stone head has lip sync.  Unity rocks!

Castles and infrared

Annotating Google Maps is fun and useful.  For a recent trip to darkest Wales, I planned out my journey as shown below:

I was shooting using an Infrared converted digital compact from Kolari Vision.  I used to shoot a lot of Kodak HIE and I have to say that shooting digital is much easier and some of the results are spectacular.
I particularly don't miss loading a fragile ancient all mechanical SLR in complete darkness, which often involved the use of the darkest room in the house (toilet).

Day of the Devs and Hacker Bus

It was a busy weekend for game developers in San Francisco this weekend.  Saturday was Day of the Devs and Sunday the Tapsense Hacker Bus left for LA, full of NVIDIA Shield portables.
Got to try some some awesome VR demos at Day of the Devs as well as getting to check idarb in person finally!
I also got into a fight with some Unity sprites and wrote some custom shaders...
