PS Vita E3 Challenge
In the lead up to E3 2012 I was invited to participate in a project to create some original programming for the SCE streaming video channel. The concept was a game show where teams would compete against each other and the clock to complete various challenges. On completion of each challenge the teams would scan an artifact using their PS Vita and this would reveal the next clue.
I was tasked with helping to design the game as well as writing all of the software. This project was completed in 3 weeks. The tv show was shot in one day and was shown on the following 3 days.
The PS Vita SDK has a augmented reality tracking library that can detect natural image markers. The way this is done is by using an offline dictionary tool to build a database representing the image. This is then compared at runtime with data from the camera. It gets interesting because the camera, graphics and feature detection libraries all run at different frame rates. Keeping these synchonized was an interesting challenge.
Overall the project was a lot of fun and I'm proud of the end results.
I think this kind of augmented reality application is ideal for marketing opportunites as well as game play.
